Athenaeum presents: Long Live Queer Nightlife by Amin Ghaziani
Omschrijving:
On Wednesday March 27, during Queer History Month, Athenaeum Bookstore organises the Dutch launch of Amin Ghaziani’s new book Long Live Queer Nightlife: How the Closing of Gay Bars Sparked a Revolution.
It’s closing time for an alarming number of gay bars in cities around the globe – but it’s definitely not the last dance!
Canadian reseacher and writer Amin Ghaziani celebrates the Dutch launch of his book at Athenaeum Bookstore. First, Ghaziani will give an introduction on his new book. After that he will be interviewed by Anouk van Amsterdam about his research and experiences in London and other places around the globe. Moreover, they will dive into the Amsterdam queer scene, with guest speakers Guido Leguit, Jackie van Gemert and Micklin Korsuize.
About Amin Ghaziani
Amin Ghaziani is professor of sociology and Canada Research Chair in Urban Sexualities at the University of British Columbia. He is the award-winning author of The Dividends of Dissent, Sex Cultures, and There Goes the Gayborhood? (Princeton). His work has been featured widely in international media outlets, including the New Yorker, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian, USA Today, and British Vogue.
About the interviewer
Anouk van Amsterdam is art historian, program maker and producer at Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, responsible for the public program of the museum. In her work she focusses on time-based media, queer theory & future ecologies. She’s also interested in political philosophy and cultural criticism.
About the guest speakers
Guido Leguit is the current owner of Café ‘t Mandje, one of the oldest and most iconic gay bars of Amsterdam. Since 1927, Cafe ‘t Mandje, located at the historic and crowded Zeedijk, is a place for ‘fun and respect’. Guido also studied art history at the University of Amsterdam.
Jackie van Gemert and Micklin Korsuize are founders of The Queer Agenda Amsterdam, an Amsterdam-based collective that creates new queer spaces, provides a platform for queer talent and captures the community through photography. Their motivation is centered around the belief that queer women, trans and non-binary people need more visibility and deserve a place within the cultural landscape of Amsterdam and beyond.
The Queer Agenda started as a printed birthday calendar, showing Amsterdam’s queer spaces and places. The analogue photos, poetry and queer days, help guide (a new generation of) queers through the city. Following the success of the calendar, Micklin, Jackie and Iona started expanding the concept of TQA into a dynamic portfolio of creative projects: from photo exhibitions to nightlife events.
